l is the tunnel kiln Which as usual coin prises drying, kpreheating, tiring and cooling zones. The preheating Zone extends from A to B, see Fig. 1,'the tiring zone from B to C, and the cooling zone from C to` D. ln the Walls ot the kiln at opposite sides of the tiring Zone are located the furnaces 2. The products of combustion from these furnaces are drawn through tlues 3 formed at opposite sides ot the preheating Zone which is a common construction.

ing zones, to the drying chamber. The loss ot heat in these passages is so great that in some instances the dryingchamber has been provided with a separate heating plant for removing the moist-ure tromthe Ware before is passed through the tiring vZone. rlhis air passage has to be built at the top ot' the kiln to obtain the most heatand therefore greatly increases the cost ot constructing a kiln. To overcomev the above objectionable features l arrange iny drying chamber 4 on top ot' thekiln. lilith this arrangement it' is only necessary to build the side Walls ot the kiln a few feet higher as the root tor mei-ly used tor the air the root ot the drying chamber. It is obvious that the drying chamber Will not require any additional land and thus anothery saving is effected.
Preferably there are two drying chambers 4 formed on topot' the tunnel kiln and eX- tending from end to end of the latter. An air passage 5 is torined at each side or the kiln and these passages communicate, by means ot damper controlled openings 5, ivith their adjacent chambers.` Each of the said passages v.extends longitudinally of the kiln adjacent the cooling andring zones and communicates With the atmosphereby means of damper controlled openings 5b and 5C respectively. The openings 5C areA located above the furnaces 2, and the openings 5b communicate With air passages 5d extending longitudinally ot the cooling zone. rlhese passages communicate7 by means of a plurality of openings 5e with the portions of the passages 5 adjacentthe coolino` zone. l/Vith this arrangement the air entering the openings 5b serves to cool the ivare in the cooling zone and the heated air rises into the passages 5 and thence into lthe chambers 4. Each chamber is provided ivith a` moist air tlue 6 extending longitudinally thereof and having a plurality ot damper controlled openings @communicating with the inte-rior ot the chamber. Each tlue 6 is provided with a. damper controlled openingV 6b which forms a communication between the iiue 6 and a transverse ilue 7b Which communicates With a stack 7.
This stack is also adapted to dravvtheproducts of combustion through the tlues 3 and past the Walls ot the drying chambers in the following manner. Flues 3a are torined at opposite sides of the kiln adjacent the drying chambers and these fluesconnnupassage will serve tor 1 nicatefby means of damper controlled openings 3" with the lines 3. Each ot the tlues 3a communicates; by means ot a damper controlled opening, with the transverse tine 7b. Assuming the kiln 1s 111 full operationthemodus operandi is as follows. rlhe ware to be treated enters the lett. hand endsfotthe drying chambers (Fig. l) over the preheatingezone. Asthe -ware progresses towards the right theheatl ot' the air passing through f the passages `5 and into the chambers becomes more intense. This 1s due to the walls ot thefkiln being. hotter near the furnaces After passing through theA portions of thef chambers located over the top ot the cooling zone; the ware is lowered to the-level ot the preheetingzone and passed through it, and then` through the tiring. andveooling-Lzones, coming out at the end ot' the kiln opposite to theend ot the drying chamber it =entered.- Any means such as a block anditackle, chute;v or hoist 8 'maybe employed vkfor lowering` and raising Vthe'ware from the discharge and entering.v ends ol the :drying chambers.
Th'emoisture isfremored from the warev as :it =is .passed through the drying chamber and before it 1s passed mtothe preheating Zone.

The combination ot' a tunnel kiln; a separate drying chamber arranged at the top oli-the kiln whereby the chamber will, be heated by conduction trom the kiln; an air passaget'ormed longitudinally in a side walll of the chamber; the passage having a plurality otl spaced openings connuunicat-ing with the' interior ot' the chamber; a moist air tlueA con'nnunicating with the interior ol the chamber; a tlue 'formed in a wall ol the chamber and separated trom the said passage and moist air tlue; and means for drawing air through the passage; chamber, andV moist air flue; and also for drawing the'products et combustion through the secondrmentioned flue.
8. A tunnel kiln provided with tiring and cooling zones; a separate drying chamber arranged at the top ot the kiln and over the said zones; a longitudinal air passage in the kiln adjacent the said zones and chamber, the passage having a plurality of spaced openings communicating with the interiorot the chamber; a moist air flue communicating With the interior of the chamber; and means for causing a circulation of air through the said passage7 openings and flue.
9. The combination or' a tunnel kiln; a separate drying chamber arranged at thev top ot' the kiln whereby the chamber will be heated by conduction from the kiln; a passageway arranged longitudinally of the chamber and Within the kiln adjacent the said Zones and provided with a controlled opening for admitting air thereto, the 4passage also having a plurality of controlled openings communicating with the interior ot the chamber; and means tor causing a circulation oit air through the passage and chamber.
10. A tunnel kiln provided with preheating, firing` and cooling zones; a separate drying chamber arranged at the top of the kiln and over the said zones; an air passage extending longitudinally ot the firing and cooling Zones and communicating with the interior of the chamber; and a lue extending longitudinally of the preheating Zone and adjacent the chamber for carrying the products ot combustion past the latter.
11. A tunnel kiln provided with preheating, tiring and cooling zones; a separate drying chamber arranged at the top of the kiln and over the said zones; an air passage extending longitudinally of the iiring and cooling zones at one side of the kiln and provided with a plurality oit openings communicating with the interior of the chamber; and a moist air line located at the side of the chamber opposite the air passage, the said flue having aplurality of openings communicating with the interior of the chamber; and a flue extending longitudinally of the preheating Zone and adjacent the chamber for carrying the products of combustion past the latter.
12. A tunnel kiln provided With preheating7 firing and cooling Zones; two separate drying chambers arranged side by side at the top of the kiln and over the said Zones and separate there-trom; air passages extending longitudinally of the iring and cooling zones at opposite sides otl the kiln, each passage being provided with openings communicating with the interior of the adjacent chamber; a moist air i'iue for each chamber arranged longitudinally thereof at the side opposite the air passage and pro vided with a plurality or' openings communicating with its chamber; lues extending longitudinally of the preheating zone at opposite sides or' the kiln and adjacent- `the chamber; and means for drawing the products of combustion through the last mentioned flue and for causing a circulation of air through the said passages7 chambers and moist air ilues.
13. The combination o't a tunnel kiln; a separate drying chamber arranged at the top of the kiln; means for preheating air and controlling its inlet into one end only of the chamber; and means for conveying the products of combustion through the Wall adjacent the other end only of the cham- Wall adjacent the other end only of the.
