Abstract

1,162,120. Circulating kiln atmosphere. SHELLEY FURNACES Ltd. 16 Nov., 1967 [17 Nov., 1966], No. 51502/66. Heading F4B. The atmosphere of a kiln 13 is circulated by a fan 15a mounted in a chamber to which additional cold air is delivered by a dampered pipe 20 opening into the recirculation duct 18 for the furnace atmosphere. Burners 22 or hot combustion gases heat the atmosphere in a chamber 16 whence it flows to the washing chamber through a perforated hearth 14. Excess gas is taken off through flues 17. In a modification, the atmosphere, after heating, is discharged from openings in a side wall of the work chamber. There may be a number of fired sections in a continuous kiln, and the fuel may be controlled in accordance with the temperature of the atmosphere entering the kiln, the fan speed being controlled to regulate the pressure in the kiln.
