Abstract
898,090. Tunnel kilns. FOUR INDUSTRIEL BELGE. March 3, 1960 [March 6, 1959], No. 7528/60. Class 51 (2). A tunnel kiln for firing ceramics on trucks 3 comprises a firing zone 5 in which lateral burners 30 are disposed in vertical rows coincident with the gaps between trucks, and a preheating zone 4 heated indirectly by muffle chambers 8 with inner metal panels and directly by burners 20 each associated with a fan 11 inducing circulation of hot gases in transverse vertical planes. Hot gases passing from the firing zone through chambers 8 to chimneys 9 may be further heated by burners 20<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2. Each fan 61 drives the gases over a partition 12 and deflectors 13 through the stacked ware 2 and over deflectors 15 to space 7, and each circuit has an air inlet 16 controlled by damper 17 and an outlet flue 18 controlled by damper 19. The burners 20 alternate on opposite sides of the tunnel and are controlled by valves 28, 29. Dampers 17, 19 and valves 28, 29 are controlled by linkage actuated by a thermostat 23. Each burner 30 has a control valve 32 and each bank of said burners an overall control 33 actuated to cut down the fuel supply when an operating ram pushes a fresh truck into the kiln, Fig. 4 (not shown). At the exit end of the firing zone 4 are vertical rows of nozzles 46, 47 directing cooling air into the kiln, the walls of which are lined with cooling tubes 48 and 49 respectively supplied with air through pipes 50 and 51 controlled by valves 53 and 54. Tubes 48 and 49 are respectively connected to mixing valves 57 and 60 which are also connected to pipes 50 and 57 and supply the mixed warm and cold air to the nozzles 46 and 47. A fuel cooling zone has indirect cooling elements 63, Fig. 2<SP>1</SP>, supplied with air by a fan 52, and fans 64 similarly arranged to the fans 11 in the preheating zone provide transverse currents of air in the tunnels. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the muffle chambers 8 are replaced by a single roof chamber to which additional heat is supplied by fuel-fired radiant tubes. Another modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), has the burners 30 arranged to discharge longitudinally of the kiln, alternate burners facing in different directions. The cooling zone may be modified, Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown), by baffles associated with the fans 64 so that air in adjacent streams is mixed to give more even cooling.
