Abstract

223,870. Bosshardt, E. Oct. 25, 1923. [Convention date]. Gaseous-fuel furnaces.-In a reversible regenerative open-hearth furnace, having a gas generator at each end, the gas drawn off from the upper part of the generators is delivered to a chamber where it mixes with the gases evolved at the white heat zone before entering the furnace. In the position shown, the hearth is fired from the right-hand end, air from the right-hand regenerator 8 passing through passages 9, 9<1> into the hearth 1 and waste gases escaping through the opposite passages 9, 9<1> into the other regenerator 8. Gas from the upper part of the generators 3 passes through flues 15 into chamber 16 from which flues 18, controlled by valves 17, lead to chambers 19 which communicate, on one side,. with the white heat zone of the generator and, on the other side, through passages 21 with the hearth 1. The chambers 16 are connected by pipes 20 and when the left-hand valve 17 is closed, as shown, the gas from both generators is delivered to the right-hand chamber 19. The escape of gases into the hearth from the generator opposite the firing end is prevented by delivering a current of air through slots 30 arranged between the chamber 19 and the hearth 1, this air current also serving to cool the ports &c. at that end of the furnace.
