Reverberatory furnaces.-In an annealing or like furnace a mixture of fuel and a restricted amount of preheated secondary air is supplied from a chamber c through a series of inlets at or about the floor level of an arched combustion chamber b and through one or more series o<+> smaller overhead flues tapering towards or away from the combustion chamber, whilst tertiary air is supplied from a second chamber through a series of flues preferably still higher up. The secondary air may be preheated by supplying it through passages e arranged alternately with fuel supply passages d, and a damper may be provided so that the second supply chamber may be supplied with air at atmospheric temperature through an inlet m, preheated air through a flue k, or a mixture of both. An oxidizing or reducing temperature is produced according to the quantity of air supplied, the products of combustion escaping through an ex haust flue p to a chimney flue q.
