Gascous-fuel furnaces.-In a gas-fired reversible regenerative open-hearth furnace, the fuel and air are supplied under pressure and mixed in the supply port before entering the working-chamber. Where the air is under a greater pressure than the gas, it is delivered obliquely into the gas stream and vice versa. Figs. I. and II. show one arrangement of ports in which gas from the regenerators enters through passages 3, 6, a central port 4, where it is mixed with air supplied through passages 2, 7, 8, and ducts 9, 10. Dampers 13, 14 control a supplementary supply of air through a port 5 if necessary. In the modification shown in Fig. VI., air is supplied through the port 4 where it is mixed with gas entering through the duct 12. Diminution of the port area is made possible by the use of a fan for withdrawing the waste gases.
