515,997. Regenerative gas fired furnaces ; reversing valves. SOUTH METROPOLITAN GAS CO., and SKINNER, A. 'J. May 13, 1938, No. 14330. [Class 51 (i)] [Also in Group XIII] In a reversible regenerative furnace heated by burners, the regenerators 6, 7 are connected with valve chambers 10, 11 having doubleseated valves 12 which .are operated to place the' regenerators alternately into communication with the waste gas passages 5 and the passages 8, 9 supplying air to the burners 1 which operate continuously. In the position of the valves shown air passes from the regenerator 7 to the ducts 8, 9 leading to the burners 1, the ducts 8, 9 being joined by cross channels (not shown). The waste gases pass through the ducts 5, 3 to the regenerator 6. Instead of the double-seated valves 12, sliding plate valves may be employed. The bottom of each regenerator communicates with a valve chamber 16 having an air inlet valve and an exhaust gas valve controlling a duct leading to a suction pump 14. The regenerative arrangements and air and waste gas ducts are shown applied to a muffle furnace 2 but the application to crucible furnaces and furnaces with heat radiating combustion flues is also described and shown.
