Abstract

553,854. Regenerators. SEMET-SOLVAY ENGINEERING CORPORATION. May 26, 1942, No. 7116. Convention date, Sept. 6, 1941. [Class 51 (ii)] [Also in Group XIII] In a reversible regenerator comprising a chamber to or from which fluid medium is supplied and exhausted alternately by a manifold provided with inlet or outlet ports communicating with the chamber, certain of the ports have gradually diverging side walls connecting top and bottom openings defining the ports and the top openings of the ports as well as the bottom openings are of varying dimensions to ensure uniform or predetermined flow of the fluid medium to and from the chamber. The invention is particularly applicable to coke ovens and Figs. 1 and 3 show one type of coke oven having outer regenerators 35, 37 and inner regenerators 36 communicating respectively with bus flues 42, 43 by means of ports 48 in the upper walls 49 of the bus flues for the supply of air or gas to the regenerators and the exhaust of waste gases therefrom. During the operation of the coke oven air or gas is supplied to the outer regenerators while waste gases are exhausted from the inner regenerator and vice versa. As shown in Figs. 4 and 6, the ports 48 in the lower wall 49 of the outer regenerators 35, 37 are arranged in groups which have tapered ports with the exception of an intermediate group in the wall 49 of the inner regenerator 35 which has a group of parallel sided ports also. The ports in the lower wall 49 of the inner regenerators 36, Fig. 5, are arranged in groups of tapered ports with an intermediate group of parallel sided ports. The ports may be circular, elliptical or rectangular in cross section.
