Abstract
515,961. Coke ovens. OTTO, C. June 16, 1938, No. 17936. [Class 51 (ii)] In a horizontal chamber over for producing coke and gas having heating walls subdivided into vertical heating flues, regenerators disposed below the heating walls and.extending in the longitudinal direction of the heating walls with means for connecting each regenerator with a relatively large number of heating flues, the cross-sectional area of the oven head heating flue and the size of the regenerator section disposed below and arranged to supply the ,head flue, are determined so as to produce a rate of flow of gases in the head flue which is greater than the rate of flow of the' gases in the other flues of the same heating wall, the rate of flow of gases in the regenerator being substantially constant throughout its length. In the oven shown in Fig. 1, -the regenerators 5 are divided into equal sections by partitions 6 corresponding to twin heating flues 3. The head flue 13 is of less longitudinal dimension than the other flues so that the gases flow through it at greater speed. Figs. 3 and 4 show ovens with heating flues 23 connected at the top by flues 20 to corresponding flues in the opposite wall of the oven chamber. The head flue 33, Fig. 3, is of the same longitudinal dimension as the other flues but the regenerator section 35 with which it is connected is longer than the other sections. The head flue 43, Fig. 4, is of shorter longitudinal dimension than the flues 23 but is connected to a regenerator section 45 of the same length as the other sections. The division walls between adjacent regenerators may be provided with metal inserts to prevent leakage.
