514,556. Retort furnaces. SCOULAR, J. G. May 10, 1938, No. 13885. [Classes 51 (i) and 51 (ii)] In a retort furnace for low temperature carbonization heating-gases from a lower distributing chamber 7 are conducted around the vertical retorts 2 to an upper collecting- chamber 1 and are returned thence by a fan 9 to the lower chamber for recirculation, fresh gases being supplied to the upper chamber by burners delivering through pipes 12 in heat exchange relationship with the lower chamber. Offtakes 14<x> for excess gases are provided, and the ports 3, 8 between the retort chamber and the chambers 1, 7 may be damper-controlled. The chambers 1, 7 may be connected by ports 14, and the pipes 12 may be formed in a vertical wall running the length of the lower chamber.
