Abstract

412,775. Distilling zinc. NEW JERSEY ZINC CO., 160, Front Street, New York, U.S.A. -(Assignees of Ginder, P. M. ; Palmerton, Pennsylvania, and Hixon, H. G. ; Depue, Illinois, both in U.S.A.) July 10, 1933, No. 19468. Convention date, April 6. Addition to 395,602. [Class 82 (i).] In an improvement in the method described in the parent Specification for recovering zinc from mixtures of zinc with substances having higher and lower boiling points than zinc, such as lead and cadmium, a common source of heat is utilized for the distillation and for supplying extraneous heat to the rectification treatment for freeing the zinc from the contaminants with boiling points lower than zinc. The furnace structure shown in sectional plan in Fig. 2 is divided into two units by a partition 11, each unit comprising distilling retorts 13 with associated charging wells 36 and leadeliminating columns 24, and a cadmiumeliminating column 19 built in a compartment within the heating chamber 12 for the retorts. Heat is supplied to the cadmium-eliminating column through walls 16 and is regulated by shelves 45 on which may be built heat-insulating brick, and ports 46 which may be closed by loose brick. The front wall of the compartment contains removable brick to permit the heat regulating adjustments to be made. Impure zinc is charged from a ladle 38 through troughs 39. Each lead-eliminating column comprises a heat insulated cylinder containing saucers 28 for retaining pools of molten metal, and communicating with a heat insulated conduit 31 which extends along the entire side of the furnace and inclines slightly from each end to a point opposite the cadmium eliminating column. Dampers 35 control the admission of the vapour into the conduit. Zinc high in lead refluxes into the retort and lead-free zinc vapour passes into the conduit 31 and thence into the cadmium eliminating column through an elbow pipe 42. The cadmium-eliminating column consists of refractory trays 17 provided with ribs 19 of progressively increasing size and openings 18 in staggered relationship. Cadmium-rich vapour passes out through a dephlegmator 21 and refined zinc flows into a receptable 44. A lower row of retorts 14 serve as deflectors for the fuel gases flowing through the heating chamber.
