Abstract

530,999. Shaft furnaces. OLIVO, M. July 7, 1939, No. 19890. Convention date, July 9, 1938. [Class 51 (ii)] The blast supply to one or more rows of tuyeres 7, 8 of a shaft furnace is heated in the blast supply box 5 surrounding the shaft by gases withdrawn from the shaft through radiators 3, 4 the rear ends 3', 4<SP>1</SP> of which project into the blast supply box and may be provided with radiating fins. The gases pass from the radiators into gilled pipes 15, 16, which encircle the shaft, before issuing from the casing. Horizontal partitions 9 may divide the blast box into upper and lower compartments each separately supplied with blast and these compartments may be further subdivided by horizontal partitions 11, 12 provided with apertures which may be controlled for varying the temperature of the blast supplied to the upper and lower sets of tuyeres. The tuyeres and radiators 3, 4 may be directed tangentially in opposite directions to the shaft. Three or more rows of tuyeres may be employed. Valve controlled pipes 20 connect the pipes 15, 16.
