448,649. Retorts; retort furnaces. WOODALL-DUCKHAM (1920), Ltd., and GARDNER, W. T., 136, Victoria Street, London. Feb. 21, 1935, No. 5569. [Classes 51 (ii) and 55 (i)] A vertical retort for the carbonisation of coal is provided with one or more division walls of a refractory material such as silicon carbide parallel to its minor axis which may contain heating flues by which the subdivided charge is heated. A single extractor gear 5 is used for the coke, and the coal is delivered from a hopper 4 equally into the chambers containing the charge. Each division wall 1, which may extend from the mouth of the retort to just above the lower outlet, may be made of silicon carbide, the retort being lined with silica bricks 6. Figs. 3 and 6 show a division wall shortened to leave a free fuel space at the top and bottom, and Figs. 3 and 4 show cross ducts 8 communicating with the heating flues 9 at each side of the retort, baffles being provided in the flues 9 to direct heating gases through the ducts 8. The walls 1 may be arranged so that the fuel spaces are of unequal size. An outlet 14 for distillates is provided at the top of the retort.
