Multiple-chamber kilns.-In a Hoffmann kiln, perforated retorts 2 are arranged within the firing chamber 1 below some or all of the usual firing-holes 12. The retorts, which are built up of sections, are provided at the upper ends with removable covers 3 and communicate at their lower ends with curved flues 5 which discharge at 10 into the chamber 1 some distance above the floor. The coke left in the retorts may be used to start the distillation in a subsequent heating operation, burnt in the furnace in conjunction with the gas, or removed from the retorts for utilisation elsewhere.
