Abstract

188,693. Bergh, S. V., and Larsson, K. E. May 20, 1921. Air supply, heating; steam-generator and like furnaces; stoking -In apparatus of the kind in which coke is discharged from retorts on to a chain or other mechanical grate and burnt beneath a boiler or the like, the retorts are heated independently of the products of combustion of the coke residue. As shown vertical retorts 1, arranged in a block 2 adapted to move on rollers 3 and heated by burners 5 located in passages between the. retorts, discharge coke on to a chain grate 7 which passes beneath a boiler 8. The clinker and ashes from the combustion of the coke are dumped through a hopper 14 into a shaft 13, closed at the bottom and supplied through a pipe 17 with air which, ascending the shaft, becomes heated and passing through the outlet pipe 18 is forced by a fan or steam jet 19 into a pipe 20 and thence to flues 11 having outlets 12 arranged beneath the upper run of the chain grate. The products of distillation are withdrawn from the retorts through pipes 6 and passed either to the burners 5 or to a purifying plant. Steam or inert gas is supplied to the lower end of the retorts to form a seal.
