[Class 51 (ii)] In a vertical retort or coke oven setting having, in the heating walls, partitions consisting of bonder bricks 3, 4 extending between the side walls of adjacent coking chambers 1, the bricks 3, 4 are disposed in a continuous contacting series over the whole or part of each partition, ports for the passage of heating gases being provided at the required positions by apertures formed in individual bricks or by co-operating recesses in adjacent bricks. In the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2, the bonder bricks are arranged in a continuous series over the whole length of each partition, one partition being formed partly of solid bricks 3 and partly of recessed bricks 4, while the adjacent partitions are composed entirely of recessed bricks 4. The partitions are completed by shaped end bricks 5 ... 8 which are not bonded into the front and back walls of the setting. Vertical baffle walls 9 are disposed in the heating flues as shown in Fig. 2 and damper bricks 10 are employed for regulating the various apertures. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the continuous series of bonder bricks 3 or 4 extends over part only of the length of the partitions, the remaining length being made up of solid bricks 3 spaced apart to provide ports 11 for the passage of heating gases.
