In a coke-oven battery of the cross-over regenerative type, such as is described in Specification 171,117, [Class 51 (ii)], the battery is divided by an unventilated division wall 2 into two sections 3 and 4, each containing an even number of ovens, and, in order to avoid lack of heat balance in the heating walls and associated regenerators on either side of such a wall and to economise in space, the heating flues 6a, 6b immediately adjacent the division wall 2 are connected by one or more cross-over flues 9 extending through or across the division wall. In an arrangement where each section of the battery has an odd number of ovens, Fig. 4, the cross-over flues 10 connecting the heating walls 6 serving the two ovens 5 on opposite sides of the division wall 2 are themselves inter, connected by one or more cross-over flues 13 extending through or across the division wall 2. With this arrangement, the gas and waste gases reversing valves are so arranged that when one of the heating walls next to the division wall is burning gas the other similar wall on the other side of the division wall has waste gases flowing therein. Dampers (not shown) are disposed in the cross-over flues in the division walls and the invention may also be applied to ventilated division walls. The division walls may also be used to carry charging cars when adjacent ovens are being repaired. When rebuilding or repairing existing coke ovens, one divisional wall may replace three ovens or two divisional walls may each replace two ovens preserving the cross-over pattern.
