Abstract
259,078. Baglin, C. A. Jan. 7, 1926. Coke ovens.-In a vertically-flued coke oven of the type in which the flues are connected in pairs to form U-shaped heating-elements and in which combustion is effected in two stages, the gas and air for the first stage are supplied separately to the heating-flues at a height above the sole level of the oven depending upon the width and height of the oven. Beneath each oven is a regenerator chamber 3 or 4 divided into compartments, each of which communicates through small distributing-chambers 13, 21 and ports 14, 20 with one heating-flue 5 or 6 in the two adjacent heating- walls. Gas is supplied to the flues 5, 6 by conduits 16, 15 respectively, and a partition 29 is provided at the base of each flue to prevent immediate mixing of the gas and air. For low ovens the height of the partition should be not less than half the width of an oven, and for high ovens three-quarters of the width. The top supply of gas is delivered continuously through passages 18 opening into both flues of the connected pairs. In one phase of operation air is supplied through the regenerators 3 and part of the gas through the conduits 16, combustion being effected in the flues 5, and the products passing through the ports 7, 8 and 9 into the downcast flues 6, where a further supply of gas is drawn in through the passages 18. The products finally escape through the regenerators 4, conduits 22, 24 and the reversing valves to the main flue. Combustion is controlled by dampers 30 at the tops of the flues, and any heating-flue can be temporarily put out of operation by covering the gas and air ports by blocks 35.
