Coke ovens.-In a bench of coke ovens fired by producer or blast-furnace gas having the main air and gas flues or tunnels 1, 2, respectively, arranged on opposite sides thereof, and in which the bench is divided into a number of sections each associated with two pairs of regenerator chambers 6, 7 and 8, 9 for heating the air and gas respectively, separate reversing controls are provided for each section of the bench. In the regenerator arrangement for a single section shown in plan in Fig. 4, the two chambers of each pair are arranged end to end, and are connected to half sole flues beneath the ovens through parallel conduits 10, 11, 12, 13, of which the two conduits 10, 13 lead to half the flues on the same sides of the bench as the chambers, while the conduits 11, 12 lead to the flues on the sides of the bench opposite to the chambers. In the position of the reversing-valves shown, air and gas are heated in the chambers 7, 8, respectively, and are passed through the conduits 11, 13 to the half sole flues of the gas regenerator side of the bench. Combustion is effected in the corresponding vertical heating-flues, and the products descend through the flues in the other half of the heating-wall to the sole flues at that side, passing thence through the conduits 10. 12, regenerator chambers 6, 9, reversing-valves 19, 20, flues 17, 65, to the main flue 18. In a modification the two regenerator chambers of a pair are arranged side by side in tunnels running lengthways of the bench.
