Coke ovens.-The coke oven described in the parent Specifications is modified for heating by preheated lean gas. In the construction shown, in which the heating gases are passed in series through four sets of heating-flues 3, there are two pairs of gas-heating chambers 4<a>, 4<b>, 4<d>, 4f beneath each alternate oven, the outermost chambers 4a, 4f supplying gas to, or receiving waste from, the outermost groups of flues, while the inner chambers 4<b>, 4d communicate through conduits 1<a>, 1<b> with the top connecting-ducts 2 between the groups of flues. The air regenerators are arranged similarly to the gas regenerators, but the two chambers of each pair are connected in series, so that the whole of the air is supplied to the outermost groups of heating-flues. When alternative firing arrangements are provided the supplies of rich gas to the upper connecting-ducts 2 are maintained continuously, while the supplies to the lower ends of the outermost groups, and to the lower connecting-duct, are reversed.
