Coke ovens.-In a vertical-flued coke oven having regenerators beneath and parallel to the ovens, the flues in one half of the length of a heating- wall are connected to their supply and exhaust passages independently of those of the other half of the wall. the regenerator beneath the oven being correspondingly divided into two pairs of chambers, so that the heating can be independently controlled for the two halves of the oven. In the oven shown which can be heated at will either by preheated poor gas, rich gas, or both simultaneously, the two regenerator chambers 22, 27 can be connected by the passages 25, 29 either with a poor gas main 23, or a flue 1, which acts alternately as an air supply and an exhaust flue. The chambers 4', 10<1> similarly communicate through passages 2', 11' with a flue 1<1> having the same functions as the flue 1. For the two adjacent ovens these connections are reversed, as shown in Fig. 12, the pairs of chambers 22<1>, 27<1> and 4, 10 corresponding in position with the pairs 4, 10 and 22, 27, being connected respectively with the conduits 23<1>, 1', and with the conduit 1, and this alternation is maintained throughout the battery. At their upper ends the chambers 4, 10, 4<1>, 10' are connected to half sole flues 5, 5<1>, and the chambers 22, 27, 22<1>, 27<1> to pairs of half sole flues 26, 26<1>. Assuming that poor gas is being supplied through the main 23, and air through the flue 1 the operation is as follows. Gas is supplied to the chambers 22, 27, and air to the chambers 4, 10, and these supplies pass through the respective half sole flues 5, 26 at the two ends of the oven to the vertical flues 6, 14, where combustion is effected. The products are exhausted through the flues 61, 141, 51, 26<1> and the regenerators 4<1>, 10<1>, 22<1>, 27<1> to the flue 1'. Rich gas may be supplied through the pipes 9, 19, and when the gas is used alone the whole of the regenerator chambers are used for heating air. An oven embodying the same general arrangement of regenerators, heating flues, and supply and exhaust connections, but adapted for the use of rich gas only, is described in the Specification.
