Abstract

308,994. Mueller, W. Nov. 24, 1927, Coke ovens.-In a coke oven adapted to be heated alternatively by rich or lean gas, the regenerator space beneath each oven is subdivided into a number of chambers 3, 4 or 3, 4 of which the chambers 3, 3 serve for preheating lean gas, and 4, 4 for air. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the heating-flues are connected in pairs, and the two flues of each pair are respectively in communication through sole flues 5, 6 or 5, 6 with regenerator chambers beneath the two adjacent ovens, the connections being such that in both phases of operation all the chambers beneath a regenerator serve for preheating air and gas, or for exhausting waste gases. Additional gas and air for combustion in the downflow flues are supplied through conduits 11, 12 formed in the flue partitions. When operating with rich gas all the regenerator compartments are used for preheating air, and the gas is supplied from a main R through conduits 9, 10 and 16. In the construction shown in Figs. 8 and the regenerator compartments are connected directly to the lower ends of the heating-flues 7 through ports 13, 14, and to the upper ends through conduits 11, 12 in the partition walls. Combustion is effected solely in the flues 7 and the conduits 11, 12 serve alternately for the supply of lean gas and air, and for exhausting waste gases. Lean gas is applied to the regenerators from beneath through mains Z and branches D, while rich gas is supplied through Nozzles X and conduits passing between the regenerators. In a modification Figs. 3-5, not shown) heating-flues operated as in Figs. 8 and 9 are supplied from sole flues as in Figs. 1 and 2, and in a further modification (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown) heating flues as in Fig. 1 are connected directly to the regenerators. The gas supply arrangements shown in Figs. 8 and 9 may be used for the oven shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
