Coke ovens.-In a rectangular solefired coke, oven the heating-flues are fired alternately from opposite ends, the air for combustion being supplied by a number of regenerator units. As shown, each heating-flue 10 extends the full length of the sole and is connected at the ends through damper-controlled ports 34 to hairpin flues 22, which are fitted with checker brickwork to act as regenerators, each. heating-flue 10, being associated with its own regenerator units. Gas is supplied to the flues 10 through nozzles 33, and the regenerators, are connected to waste gas flues 39 by boxes 31 having controllable air inlets 31<a>. The tops of the heating-flues and the floor of the oven are built up of channelled silica blocks 11 having side grooves 14 for the reception of cement jointing. An auxiliary connection 50 between each regenerator and the heating-flue is preferably provided, and this connection is covered over by a channel shaped block 46, which is closed at the end 48 facing the adjacent burner, and open at the opposite end, and has a narrow slit 52 in the top. The cover may be formed of two channel blocks laid end to end, as shown, and its position may be adjusted to vary the point at which the addit-ional air is supplied to the flue.
