Coke ovens. - In the vertical coke, oven described in the parent Specification the connections of the two superposed groups of flues in each heating-wall are so arranged that all the flues in a wall carry either gases in active combustion or waste gases. The regenerators 32, 38 are superposed in two rows at one side of the bench, and the upper flues and regenerators, and the lower flues and regenerators, form two separate heating-units. The upper regenerators are connected bv horizontal channels 31 to the upper ends of the upper groups of flues 29 in the heating-walls, and the lower ends of these groups are connected in pairs by channels 34 and horizontal ducts 35 passing across an intervening oven. The lower regenerators 38 are connected by a flue 37, opening into the middle of an horizontal channel 36, to the lower ends of the lower groups of flues 30 and the upper ends of these groups are also connected in pairs by channels 40 and the ducts 41. In a modification the flues 37 lead from the upper .ends of the lower regenerators, and in this construction an expansion joint is provided between the two banks of regenerators. The channels 34, 40 communicate with the heating-flues through side ports 43. The ovens may be heated either by lean gas preheated in the regenerators, or by rich gas supplied through burners 47, 48.
