[Class 51 (ii)] In a vertically - flued coke oven recirculation of a portion of the combustion products is effected by connectingadowncast flue in one heating wall to an upcast flue in an adjacent wall through a duct 101 passing beneath the intervening oven. The oven shown has flues of the " hairpin " type connected by the usual ports 78 to transverse gas and air regenerators 63, 64 grouped in threes, as described in Specification 238,367, [Class 51 (ii)], with a gas regenerator situated between a pair of air regenerators. Rich gas may be used as an alternative fuel, and is supplied through conduits 91 in the walls separating the regenerator groups. The invention is also described in its application to an oven having cross-over flues as in Specification 171,117, [Class 51 (ii)], and in this case rich gas ducts are provided in alternate regenerator walls, the arrangement being such that the ducts in use are situated between two inflow regenerators.
