Coke ovens.-In a coke oven having alternative firing arrangements for rich and poor gas including two sets of regenerators which are used both for air, or one for air and one for gas, according to the nature of the gas in use, three sets of delivery passages, for air, rich gas, and lean gas respectively, are provided, and each set is employed for delivering exclusively the medium for which it is designed. In the oven shown having regenerator tunnels v, w running the length of the battery, and in which combustion is effected alternately in half-wall groups of vertical flues h, three distributing passages a, c, d for rich gas, poor gas, and air respectively, are associated with each half-wall. The passages a are connected directly to the rich gas main g, the passages c to the tunnel v through closable ports x, and the passages d to both tunnels v, w through closable ports y, z. When using rich gas the ports x are closed and air, supplied through both regenerators to the passages d, is delivered to the heating-flues through ports k in the partition walls. When poor gas is used the ports x are opened, the ports y are closed, and gas, supplied from a main m to the regenerator v, is delivered to the heating-flues through the passages c, the air being supplied through the regenerator w, passages d and ports k as before.
