Gaseous-fuel furnaces.-In a coke oven of the kind in which the heating-flues are connected in. pairs, and the direction of flow of the combustion products is reversed at intervals, regenerators for air are arranged longitudinally beneath the ovens and between them are gas-heating flues which can be by-passed when gas of high thermal value is used. Beneath each oven is a sole flue which, on the one hand is connected through ports 9 with alternate flues in the heating-walls on both sides of it, and on the other to a regenerator chamber incompletely divided by a partition 11 so that the gases pass horizontally through the two compartments. Beneath each pair of regenerator is a gas-heating system comprising horizontal flues 22, 24, connected by vertical passages 23. The gas is supplied from a main 20 to the flue 22, and leaves the heating- system through the connection 25, passing thence through the reversing-valve 26 to one or other of two horizontal flues in the heating-wall. The gas-heating system can be by-passed through the connection 25<a>, or the connection 25 can be removed and replaced by a forked pipe with a three-way valve leading from the main 20 to the fiues 18, 19.
