Coke ovens.-In a horizontal-flued vertical " chamber " or coke oven the horizontal heating- flues are extended to form recuperators for heating the gas and air for combustion, adjacent flues being connected respectively with a waste gas chamber, and with air and gas preheating chambers of a recuperator. In one construction the heating-flues b of the ovens a are connected in pairs, and the upper flue of each pair is supplied with gas and air through the passages c, d respectively, while the lower one is connected to the exhaust flues i through the passages e. In a modified construction with two ovens end to end in the width of the bench, the h-eating-flues extend right across the bench between recuperators at the two ends, and the connections are such that in adjacent flues the heating-gases flow in opposite directions.
