Regenerators.-In ai gas-fired retort furnace, the air for secondary combustion is heated in a regenerator comprising superposed waste gas flues C one or two of which are connected with the downtake flue T. The flues C communicate with one another by passages C<1> in vertical alignment and are surrounded on all sides by air passages to which air is admitted through an opening A<2>, the heated air escaping to the combustion chamber through ports A<1>. Dampers are provided in the waste-gas flues which have inspection lids L at their front ends.
