[Class 51(ii)] In a vertically flued regenerative coke oven including a Series of coking chambers alternating with heating flues I', P<1> of the " hairpin " type, regenerators I, P are provided for heating the air, with' recuperators s, s<1> for heating lean gas disposed immediately following the 'regenerators in the direction of flow of the waste gases. rich gas' being also supplied to burners m by ducts l. When heating with lean gas, air enters through ducts a passing through regenerator I or P and then through ducts b to heating flue I<1> or P<1> respectively, where as gas passes through recuperator s or s<1> and ducts c and d to heating flue I<1> or P<1> respectively. Waste gases from the flue P pass through the top opening f to the flue P<1>, then by means of ducts g to the regenerator P, the recuperator s and to a flue - J by a valve k, a similar path being provided through the regenerator I and recuperator s<1> for waste gases from the heating flue P<1>. The recuperators s, s<1> may be lined with refractory material of such a thickness that due to the time taken for the heat from the waste gases to traverse said lining, recuperator s may work with regenerator P and recuperator s<1> with regenerator I. Separate three-way valves are provided for the rich gas, the lean gas and for the air, separate single valves k being provided for the waste gas outlets.
