Abstract

1,007,606. Coke ovens. KOPPERS CO. Inc. April 13, 1962 [April 13, 1961 (2)], No. 14464/62. Heading F4B. A regeneratively heated coke oven of the compound underjet type has high and low burners 17, 18 located in each of a number of vertical flues 4 disposed alongside horizontal coking chambers 2, the flues 4 being connected in pairs by crossover flues 6 and operable alternately as " on " and " off " heating flues. The high and low burners are fed with fuel gas by separate riser channels 15, 13 respectively which are connected by pipes 26, 26a and headers 19, 19a to supply mains 22, 22a and thereby to rich fuel gas main 30. Lean gas such as blast furnace gas may be mixed with the rich gas (e.g. coke oven gas) for the high burners externally of the battery by means of branch lines 28 and valve 31. Recirculation ducts 24 connect the burners of an " off " flue to the riser channels of an " on " flue and nozzles 27 act in conjunction with Venturi sections 24<SP>1</SP> in the riser channels, as aspirating means to draw into the rising fuel gas streams a proportion of recirculated waste gases as a diluent. By this means and by the external mixing of rich and lean gases deposition of carbon in the riser passages resulting from cracking of rich gas can be avoided. The flow of gas to the burners may be controlled by valves 29 and also by the selection of suitably sized nozzle tips 27a. Combustion air is preheated in the usual way by regenerators 9 disposed below the coking ovens 2. In a modifition, Fig. 6 (not shown) recirculation ducts are provided for the high burner only.
