Gaseous-fuel furnaces; cleaning; reversing- valves.-In a coke oven having gas supply conduits extending some distance into the oven structure, air for burning out carbon deposits in the gas nozzles, &c., is delivered to the conduits at their inner ends, the direction of flow being from the gas conduits to the combustion flues. As shown in connection with a vertical-flued regenerative oven, in which reversal is effected between two half-wall groups of the heating-flues E and the gas is supplied through conduits H, HA extending from the two sides of the bench, the decarbonizing air is supplied through pipes H<3>, HA<3> beneath the regenerators, and vertical passages H<2> opening into the conduits H, HA at their inner ends. To prevent choking of the passages H<2> by broken gas nozzles, their upper ends are made in the form of narrow slots, and catch-pits H<6> are provided at their lower ends for the reception of small fragments which may pass the slots. The reversal of the air supply between the passages H<3>, HA<3> is controlled by valves L adjacent to, and operated simultaneously with, the ordinary reversing-valves, J, and the supplies of air are regulated by interchangeable perforated diaphragms fitted in the pipe connections beteen the valves and the passages H<3>, HA<3>. When the combustion air for the oven is supplied under pressure, the right-hand vertical flue H<2> leading to the gas conduit HA is connected to the left-hand air main, and vice versa.
