Coke ovens.-In a coke oven with inverted-U flues in the heating-walls, the supplies of gas and air to the individual burners are controlled, an.i the inspection of the gases from the flues is effected, from galleries running along the walls of the bench. In the oven construction shown, in which the air for combustion is heated in reversible regenerators, the gas and air are supplied to the flues 3 through burner blocks 4, 19 extending through the setting to the sides of the bench. One set of blocks is arranged wholly beneath the heating-wall, while the other is mainly below the floor of an adjacent oven, the ends of the gas and air passages being bent, as shown in Fig. 2, to connect with the heating-flues. At the sides of the bench, the gas passages are connected to a supply main 8 through a vertical pipe 7 fitted with a control valve, and connexions 6 with regulating- valves. The air passages in the burner blocks stop short of the walls of the bench and open into chambers 10 in communication with one or other of the regenerators. Inspection openings 18 are provided in the walls of these chambers, and on observing the condition of the gases from the individual flues, the combustion can be regulated by the valves in the pipes 6 and the damper blocks 17.
