Coke ovens; r e t o r t furnaces. - In a cokeoven structure comprising upwardly-tapering vertical retorts heated by horizontal flues in the walls between the retorts, the uppermost flues are arranged and connected to act as discharge flues for the gases from the lower combustion flues. In the arrangement shown, two sets of flues separated by a partition 6 are provided in each heating-wall. Each of the lower group of flues is connected to a gas-main 20, and an air supply flue 9, while each of the upper group 5 leads to an exhaust flue 10. An intermediate group of flues 4 may be provided connected both with the air and gas supplies and with the exhaust flue so as to serve either as combustion flues or as discharge flues so that the heating of the middle of the length of the retort can be controlled. Valves or dampers are fitted in the gas, air and exhaust passages so that the flow through each flue can be individually controlled. The flues 9, 10 are connected to chambers 22, 23 which can be put in communication through the reversing- valve 24 with either of the regenerators 27, 28.
