Gaseous-fuel furnaces; regenerators.-In horizontal and vertical gas retorts and coke ovens having horizontal heating-flues and gas conduits in the heating-walls, gas is supplied to each flue 3 from several conduits 30, 31, 32 which discharge at different points 33, 34, 35 in the length of the flues 3. As shown, the oven is fired from each end, the flues 3 and the conduits 30, 31, 32 being arranged in pairs, and gas is supplied to these conduits from vertical chambers 36, Fig. 5, having valves 42 and provided with removable glands to facilitate cleaning. The gas outlets 33 are made diverging, and the outlets 34, 35 are extended downwards to the level of the bottom of the conduit 30. Air for combustion enters a tunnel 25 and flows through a dampered passage 24 and regenerator flues 18 to a conduit 20 whence it passes to a vertical passage 6 and enters each flue 3 through an opening controlled by a vertically - hinged damper operated through a normally-closed passage in the end wall of the flue 3. The combustion products pass into a flue 7 through openings controlled by vertically-hinged refractory plates 10 operated from the top of the flues 7, and then flow through the sole flue 21 and the outer and central flues 19 of the regenerator to a dampered conduit 27 leading to the outlet flue 29.
