Abstract
7664. Boult, A. J., [Putsch, A.]. March 27. Gaseous-fuel furnaces.-Consists primarily in constructing the heating flues of a coke oven or the like of triangular cross-section, thus forming a braced heating-flue wall, and comprises also a particular relative disposition of heating-flues, sole flues, regenerators, &c. The vertical heating-flues 21, 22, Figs. 5 and 6, are constructed of Y-bricks, the stems 25 of which alternate with bricks 27 in both horizontal and vertical sections of the flues, the Y-bricks of one course being staggered and reversed with respect to those of the next course. With the gas and reversing valves in one of their two working positions, gas passes through conduits 29, 30 to flues 31, 32 and meets hot air from regenerators 12 and sole flues 14. The combustion products flow through uptakes 21, Figs. 4 and 5, and downtakes 22 and escape through sole flues 14<a> and regenerators 12a to the stack. On reversal, the path of the gases in the heating-flues 21, 22 is reversed, and the functions of the flues 14, 14<a> are exchanged. Normally-closed observation openings 39 are arranged in alignment with small openings 39<a>, and chambers 20 furnished with removable plates 43 provide access to covers 43<a> and observation openings 41. The ovens are tapered upwards by gradually enlarging the flues or flue walls.
