Abstract

15,831. Ferraris, E. Aug. 6. Regenerative retort furnaces for zinc &c.-Relates to a regenerative furnace employed in the process of distillation, such as the manufacture of zinc from its ores. The form shown in broken sections in Figs. 1 and 2 consists of four similar parts combined into one furnace. Each part contains series of retorts a in a chamber A, and the combustible gases pass into the right-hand chambers A, Fig. 1, through holes e from the pipe B and flues c, d. Each chamber A rests on a regenerator D, which is filled with bricks arranged to form horizontal passages, some of which are separated from the others by a partition l. The air required for combustion passes through a valve C to flues g, h, and thence through the two corresponding regenerators D and openings into the chambers A, where it mixes with the combustible gases. The products of combustion pass through openings o' to the regenerators D' and thence through the flues h<1>, g<1> and valve C to the chimney. The valve C can be reversed so that the air enters the flue g<1> and the products of combustion leave by the flue g, and, by connecting the valve C to a valve b in the pipe B, the valve b is simultaneously operated to deflect the combustible gases initially into the left-hand chambers A.
