Abstract

164,372. Low Temperature Carbonisation, Ltd., Armstrong, H. L., and Davidson, T. M. Aug. 21, 1919. Gaseous-fuel furnaces; regenerators.-In settings for vertical retorts having heating-flues in the vertical spaces between them, the waste gases pass out through flues formed in two parallel portions i, j, Fig. 3, separated by a narrow partition wall, air-preheating flues l, m, similarly formed, being disposed parallel to, and at the sides of, the waste-gas flues, and having communicating passages n extending through the partition wall. In the retort setting shown, horizontal partitions b form a number of communicating horizontal heating-chambers c, gas burners d being arranged at alternate ends of successive chambers. The products of combustion pass downwards through openings e in the horizontal partitions, finally passing from the lowermost chamber c through a flue g to the vertical flue i, and thence downwards through the flue j to the stack. Secondary air, heated in the flues l, m, passes through passages o into passages in which the burners d are arranged. It may also be supplied to the chambers c from longitudinal passages in the partitions p with transverse ports at intervals; or the passages may extend to the outside of the setting and communicate with the outer air.
