Abstract

993. Schniewind, F. W. C. Jan. 15. Coking.-A batch of regenerative coke ovens B is supported by a platform A<3>, carried by cross-beams A<1> which rest upon columns A. The platform A<3> is made up, preferably, of a series of beams set close together, and the columns A are braced together by means of struts A<4>. The ovens are heated by means of flues, some of which are arranged beneath the oven soles, while the others C, shown in the longitudinal section, Fig. 2, are situated between the walls of adjacent ovens. These flues C are divided into combustion chambers C', C', C<3>, C<4> and C<5>, C<6>, C<7>, C<8>, by vertical walls D, D', D', D<3>, D<4>, D<5>, D<6>, and the upper part of each of these combustion chambers is preferably divided into a series of flues by vertical partitions d. The chambers C' to C<4> and C<5> to C<8> communicate, by means of passages e, with two sets of chambers E<1> to E<4> and E<5>, E<6>, &c., which respectively communicate with two long flues F, F<1>, constructed immediately below the sole of the corresponding oven. These long flues respectively communicate with two regenerators I, 1<1>, which are supported independently of the columns. Gas is introduced into one of the sets of chambers C' to C' or C<5> to C<8> by gas burners G<1>, G<8>, connected to a gas pipe G<10>, G<11>, and air is admitted from the corresponding regenerator into the flue F, F<1>, and the chambers E<1> to E<4> or E<3> &c., whence it flows into the combustion chambers through the passages e. The ignited gases pass up the vertical flues between partitions d, and flow through the flues and chambers of the opposite half of the oven and the corresponding regenerator to the chimney flue. The regenerators and corresponding sets of flues are worked alternately in the usual way. Valves h, h<1> serve for regulating the flow of air aud gas through the regenerators.
