Retort furnaces. - In connexion with vertical retorts for distilling coal, shale, lignite &c. of the kind in which the coal &c. passes through zones of different temperatures, and the different gaseous products are drawn off at different levels from the retorts through outlets which are arranged to overhang certain parts of the retorts in such a manner that obstruction of the outlets cannot take place, the heating of the retorts is effected by gas and regeneratively heated air, and the burners and flues are so arranged that the products of combustion pass downwards through staggered passages arranged so as to be easily adjustable for varying the heating and for main. taining a uniform heat throughout each horizontal zone. Cool air may be admitted when desired to the flues. The burners and flues are arranged as in Fig. 2. Each pair nf retorts has a series of flues 17 between them, and these flues receive heated gases from burners 20 supplied from a header 22 and pipe 21 with a mixture of gas and heated air, which the header receives from a pipe 23 and a recuperator 25 respectively, the recuperator 25 serving to cool the coke prior to discharge. The flues 17 are connected by passages 19 arranged in staggered relation to one another, and the openings to the passages 19 may be controlled by dampers preferably consisting of independent bricks 32 operated by a tool inserted through an opening 33 normally closed by a door 34. The passages 19 increase in size according to their distance from the burners in order to secure uniformity of heat, and to control temperature the burners 20 are fitted with valves 29, and valves 31 control the admission of cool air. The products of combustion pass by openings 27 and tube 28 to a chimney shaft.
