Abstract

1001. Neureuther, C. F. Jan. 15. Regenerative retort furnaces.-Relates to furnaces such as are used in the extraction of zinc, and consists of means whereby the upper tiers of retorts are enabled to get their share of the heat. 1, 2 and 3, 4 are pairs of air and gas regenerators used alternately, the valves for which are arranged in the ordinary way and are not shown. The furnace is divided into two compartments 13 and 14, corresponding to the two pairs of regenerators, and through the partition wall 10 passages 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 are formed, the lower ones being larger than the upper ones, so that the gases coming, say, from the regenerators 1 and 2 are delivered in large quantity through the passage 20, and, as they rise and become cooler, are reinforced by further supplies through the upper passages 22 and 23. The gases then pass over the top of the wall 10 and down between the retorts in the adjacent chamber to the other pair of regenerators.
