Abstract

18,008. Schneemilch, O. Aug. 8. Retort furnaces.-In a zinc-extracting furnace with vertical retorts, each retort is supported on a removable plate or block having a perforation which is plugged with clay to retain the materials during the heating operations. The retorts 21 are supported freely in a chamber 1 to which combustible gas and heated air are supplied through suitable conduits, and from which the gases escape through flues 7 to regenerators 8. These have vertical passages 9, 10, 11 for the hot gases and 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 for air, the passages of each set being connected alternately at top and bottom by cross chambers such as 19. The retorts 21 are carried by loose caps 29 removably supported on bars 31 pivoted to the beams 34 on which the retort chamber is built. Each cap is preferably faced with a fire-clay block 28, and both cap and block have a central opening 30 which is plugged with fire-clay when the retort is to be filled. Pairs of retorts are connected at the top by conduits 25 leading to condensers 26, and the openings 23 between the retort and the roof and floor of the retort chamber are plugged with fire-clay.
