Regenerators.-In regenerative coke ovens which may be used alternatively as gas retorts, the heating wall of each oven is connected to two regenerators, and means are provided for supplying to the heating-walls either distillation gases which are not pre-heated or producer gas which is pre-heated in regenerators otherwise used for air. When the distillation gases are employed, they are delivered to one half of the heating-wall from a conduit h and, when the valves are in positions shown, air is supplied from regenerators r, e, and the combustion products pass through the flues in the other half of the heating-wall and the regenerators s, f to the outlet flue. When producer gas is employed, the gas supply to the conduit h is cut off, the regenerator chambers e, f are used alternatively for heating air, and the regenerator chambers r, s are supplied alternatively with producer gas from a conduit o.
