Abstract

196,264. Verpeaux, P. E. April 11, 1922. [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Gaseous-fuel furnaces.-Relates to regenerative coke ovens in which the direction of flow of the heating gases is reversed, and comprises a method of controlling 'the heating so as to prevent the occurrence of " hot points " in the flues. In the construction shown the heating- gases flow in opposite directions in adjacent flues, a, b, the whole of the air and a portion of the gas during any period being supplied at the base of alternate flues, while the remainder of the gas is admitted at the top. The supply of gas at the two points is varied " according to laws suitably combined," and gases of different nature may be supplied at different points. The top gas-supply is delivered from one side of the bench through two channels c, which merge at the middle of the bench into a single channel, and the supply is regulated by damper blocks e. The air for combustion is supplied from regenerator chambers f, g, arranged in pairs beneath the ovens, each pair being connected to a lower chamber h. The lower gas-supply is heated in a flue n between the regenerator blocks. Valve arrangements are described by which the gas-admission pipes can be put into communication either with a " gascollector " or a chamber to which air for decarbonizing the gas passages is supplied. In this chamber is a continuously-operated valve, which varies the distribution of the gas or air between a pair of supply passages.
