513,055. Coke ovens. OTTO, C. Feb. 23, 1938, No. 5733. [Class 51 (ii)] In an underfired vertically-flued regenerative coke oven having in each heating-wall flue groups, each with one or more upflow and downflow flues, the ducts for supplying rich gas to the heating-flues are so situated that, at such times as the ducts are in use for the supply of gas, they are flanked by regenerators which are also supplying combustion media to the heating-flues. In the twin-flued oven, shown, which is adapted for firing alternatively by rich and lean gas, there is a pair of regenerator chambers 3, 4 beneath each oven 7 and each of these chambers is connected with alternate heating-flues 2 in both of the heating- walls of the oven situated above them, the remainder of the flues being connected to the chambers beneath the adjacent ovens. The rich gas ducts 15 formed in walls 18 between the chambers 3, 4 are connected to the flues by the inclined ducts 16, and these ducts may be formed of tubular stones such as 19a or 19b, Fig. 3, with expansion gaps between their abutting ends and between their outer faces and the surrounding brickwork. The gas passage in the stone 19a may be widened to allow for its partial reduction by relative movement between the stones. Where there are three or four chambers beneath each oven, the inner one or two for preheating gas and the outer ones . for air, the rich gas ducts are formed in the walls between the gas and air chambers. Both rich and lean gas may be supplied through the same pipe 22 which is in communication with the ducts 15 and the gas regenerators 3, and the reversing-valves which are situated in the oven side of the pipes 22 may be coupled for simultaneous operation. The inlet openings for the supply of air for decarbonizing the gas passages are on the oven side of the flow regulating valves or devices.
