Abstract

407,023. Coke ovens. MUELLER, W., 1, Schillerstrasse, Gleiwitz, Germany. Aug. 26, 1932, No. 23908. [Class 51 (ii).] In a regenerative coke oven battery adapted for operation by rich or lean gas, and having in each heating-wall a single row of vertical flues interconnected by an horizontal passage 10 at their upper ends, a pair of vertical ducts 11, 12, is provided in each partition wall between the flues, and these ducts are connected on the one hand by inclined channels 15, 16 to the regenerators beneath, and on the other to one of the two adjacent heating-flues through superposed openings 9. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 5, in which the regenerator connections are such that upflow and downflow flues alternate along the length of the heating-wall the ducts 11, 12 of alternate partition walls are connected through inclined channels 15, 16 to one gas and one air regenerator 3, 4 of a group of three regenerators beneath one of the adjacent ovens. The corresponding ducts 11, 12 of the intermediate partition walls are similarly connected through channels 15, 16 to the regenerators 3, 4 beneath the other adjacent ovens, and by this arrangement gas and air are supplied at different levels in the upflow flues to effect combustion in stages. As shown in Fig. 5, the channels 16, 16 cross one another. Rich gas for combustion may be supplied through vertical or horizontal conduits 5, 6, and from above through the conduit 17. In a modification, Fig. 2, each flue 7 is connected to one set of regenerators by ports 13, 14 opening into the base of the flue, and to the other set through the ducts 11, 12 in the partition walls. In one phase of operation, in which upflow combustion is effected in all the flues 7, the ducts 11, 12 serve for the escape of the waste gases, and the ports 9 act as recirculation ports, while in the other phase the flues 7 are all downburning, with multistage combustion of gas and air supplied through the ducts 11, 12 and ports 9. Other modifications are described having a pair of regenerator chambers beneath each oven, and a single chamber divided by transverse partitions into air and gas compartments alternating along its length. The flue partitions are built, as shown in Fig. 4, of alternating courses of half bricks 21 extending through to the faces of the wall, and whole bricks 20 recessed into the stretcher bricks 22. Preferably a whole brick course in alternate walls corresponds with a half brick course in the intermediate walls.
