Abstract

110,825. Halkett, R. Dec. 5, 1916. Metal-heating furnaces.---In a furnace or oven for the heat treatment of steel &c., the air for secondary combustion is led to flues at the middle of the furnace, and passes thence to side combustion chambers, and the waste gases are exhausted through flues in the walls of the heating-chamber having their inlet ports near the door opening. Burners E are provided at both sides of the furnace, and their nozzles are sealed to the baseplate P to prevent entrance of air at this point Combustion takes place in vertical flues or combustion chambers G, and the products pass to the heating-chamber H through side ports, and through flues F<2> beneath the hearth leading to an end port. Air for secondary combustion is supplied through flues F, F', the latter of which is situated at the middle of the furnace, and communicates with the combustion chambers G by horizontal passages. The products of combustion escape from the heating-chamber through side flues, the inlet openings to which are placed near the doorway, so that any air drawn into the furnace when the door is opened will pass direct to the chimney flue. To prevent excessive admission of secondary air, the valves at the entrances to the flues F are linked together and interconnected for simultaneous operation with the flue damper. The furnace is closed by a vertically sliding door connected by a chain passing over a pulley with a counterweighted lever. The atmospheric burners E are of the type in which the air-supply openings are closed when the gas is cut off, thus preventing air from being drawn into the furnace through burners not in use. In a suitable construction. shown in Fig. 11, the plug 3 of the valve controlling the supply of gas from the main M carries a sleeve extension 7, which regulates the admission of air through the ports 15. The gas supply is further controlled by a needle valve 12. The mixing-tube 9 is of Venturi form, and connexion with the furnace is made by a nozzle piece 10 with a flange fitting 11.
