Abstract

120,633. Hutchins, T. W. S. Nov. 17, 1917. Muffle furnaces.-A furnace for drying and heating carbon blocks &c. comprises a number of chambers arranged round a gas-producer and connected for operation after the manner of a continuous kiln. In the construction shown, six vertical muffles a<1> - - a<6> arc arranged in chambers, which cun be put into communication with the central gas-producer c and with one another through flues at the top of the furnace controlled by dampers d, c respectively. At the bottom, each chamber communicates through connexions g with a flue h having dampers for controlling the passage of the combustion products to the stack, and inlets, controlled by dampers g', for admitting air to the various chambers. In operation, assuming that the muffle a<1> is open for drawing and re-charging, and the muffle a<4> is being fired, air is admitted to the chamber surrounding the muffle a<2>, and passes through the chamber of the muffle a' to burn with gas from the producer admitted to the chamber of the muffle an. The products of combustion escape through the chambers of the muffles a', a<6>. Vertical partitions may be provided in each chamber, to cause the air and gases to take a longer path.
