Abstract

1168. Schmatolla, E. Jan. 17. Regenerative furnaces &c.-In a furnace or kiln for burning magnesia bricks and for other purposes in which high temperatures are necessary, the gasproducer, the heating-chamber, and the regenerators are arranged in a compact block to prevent excessive loss of heat by radiation. In the arrangement shown, the gas-producer c is situated beneath the heating-chamber a, and the two are connected by central flues i and side flues e. The regenerators bare arranged vertically at the sides of the producer and heating-chamber. When the furnace is first started, the dampers f are closed, air is supplied through flues s, and the products of combustion pass into the heating-chamber through the flues i and out through both regenerators. After a time, the flues i are closed, gas is supplied through one of the flues e, and the reversing-valves are manipulated so that air is supplied, and the products of combustion pass out, through the proper regenerators. The materials are fed into the furnace through a shaft a<1> which is kept free to prevent the products of combustion from passing over instead of through the charge. The reversing- valve consists of a box k, Fig. 4, which can be arranged to connect either of the flues b4 with the chimney flue b<5>. In large furnaces, the flues b<4>, b<5> may be duplicated so that two boxes k can be used.
