Furnace fire-places; ash-pans ; tuyeres ; regenerators. - The fireplace of a reverberatory furnace comprises a deep well or fuel shaft b closed at its lower end by a water - sealed ashpau f. The seal is formed by the supporting- plates g for the walls of the fire-place, which are so arranged that their vertical flanges clear the sides of the ash-pan. Air and steam are supplied to the fuel bed through tuyere boxes h, having cleaning openings j in alinement with the deliver nozzles i, and closed by flaps k. The air is heated in helical tubes arranged within or around the outlet flue m for the waste gases, and air for secondary combustion may be supplied through the bridge from passages q beneath the hearth.
